Intermittent engine light led to diagnosis of worn wires to egr valve, code po404. These wires were replaced, but engine light persisted. Second inspection revealed code p1404, and cause was determined to be in the computer--probably from worn wires shorting the circuit. Since we have no mandatory emissions inspection in this area, I was advised to simply ignore the engine light, OR replace the computer. If I do not replace the computer, will the malfunctioning computer control of the egr valve cause more computer damage or other damage? I hate to put a new computer in a car of this age. Help!

It is doubtful that replacing the computer will help or fix anything. You really need a different shop that knows how to troubleshoot these issues. This one apparently doesn't.
