Check engine light sometimes comes on. Code reader says $7E8. I can’t find anyplace that can tell me what this is/what needs to be repaired. Had exhaust system checked and there is no problem there. Any help appreciated, as I need to get fixed so car passes inspection and I can renew my tags (plates). Thanks.

Good evening,

Where did you get this code? This is not an engine code. The code comes up as P and 4 numbers. This must be a control module code.

Hi,

You aren't fully into the code reading section of the scanner. The $7E8 is the menu for the engine data streaming information. Click on it and it should take you to a page that says read codes. Select that and let me know if it works.

Also, if it doesn't, let me know what kind of scanner you have.

Thanks. I will check it again. I’m thinking the first time I used the code reader I got a P0013 code.

I'm going to try again tomorrow. But a few weeks ago I must have pushed the right buttons and got a P0013.

It's Joe again. It's easy to make that mistake. Listen, if it is a P0013, it is related to the exhaust camshaft position sensor. Let me know what the symptoms are (if there are any).

DTC P0013
- Exhaust Camshaft Position Actuator Solenoid Valve Control Circuit

Let us know what you find.

Okay, this code looks to be electrical from the looks of the diagnostics. It could be a connection at the solenoid but needs to be confirmed.

It also could be from a timing chain that is stretched as well.

I attached the description and testing required for the code. It is not an easy code to fix. The failure must be identified before replacing anything.

JOEANDNICKOLAS,

So, this morning when I used the code reader (and my check engine light has not been on for several, maybe a week), it showed no codes.

Took a 2 hour ride and engine light came on. Just checked and now it does show the P0013 message and (forgot to take my phone with me to take picture, live on third floor with no elevator and am an overweight 64-year-old, so didn’t feel like doing the steps) it does show something like what you wrote, camshaft position actuator.

Also, maybe not related, but check engine light seems to only come on when gas take goes below half tank.

Thanks for everyone’s help. More tips/suggestions really appreciated.

Besides having the exhaust system checked (no exhaust leaks), just me. Trying to see if I can figure what’s wrong before I figure out where to take it.

Glanced over them. I’m not mechanical. I will look them over again. I will also show them to a friend who knows about cars.
