Good afternoon.
Does the shifter move around in it neutral gate?
Does the clutch pedal feel good? Will it release the clutch?
Can you shift gears with the engine off?

It sounds like you did not line up the shifter correctly when you installed it. It has to be in neutral (all slots aligned straight across) when the stick is installed.

Yes, as Wrenchtech said, the shifter is out of sync with the shift rails.
Remove the shifter again and use a screwdriver to align the three rails so the slots are all lined up in the middle. Then install the shifter, bolt it down and then try it again.

If it came out again then you may have a shifter rail issue internally. The shift just moves back and forth, up and down.
