Cluster issue, no info can be read including miles?

The picture is just an example of what it looks like, the middle black part on top does not light at all and, where do I start? Is it a common issue?

Yes, this is common when the instrument cluster goes out and needs to be replaced. here is how to remove and replace the unit but I would get a rebuilt unit by searching google or eBay so it will come preprogrammed. I would check all fuses just in case before doing the cluster.
