While driving it struggles to go into its 'virtual gear' and clunks into action and judders?

When I drive it struggles to go into its 'virtual gear' and clunks into action and judders, went into EP mode last night. However, there were no issues with gears in EP mode, a very smooth drive in EP mode. Will not rev over 4,000 on idle. EP mode turns off after restarting the car.
