2000 Citroen Saxo engine dies when driving

My engine dies when driving and the rev counter goes way up. this problem is sometimes rectified by changing gears but occasionally i have to park and turn off the engine for 5 minutes. Even having done this, the rev counter can still be high without even touching a pedal.
