Too much oil

My car is a 2000 Dodge Caravan. It is automatic and has about 60,000 miles. It is a 4 wheel drive vehicle. It recently was having problems, and I didn't know what was wrong. I don't have a lot of car experience, so I didn't do much. I found out it was low on oil. I was going to buy a couple of quarts, try that, and then buy more if needed. My husband said no, buy a large bottle, so I did. He wasn't home and I was having problems, so I added oil. All of it. Then, I started the car. I went inside to get the kids ready for school, and came out to white smoke with oil blown out of the exhaust pipe.
I'd like to know a diagnosis, and if its an expensive problem to fix.
I haven't driven the vehicle since this happened.
HELP! I'm going crazy without a vehicle, and my husband isn't being very helpful. (Never home during the day time and insists that he doesn't know anything about cars).
I live in a small town, so I would like to have an idea of what to expect before I go for help, because I've heard many of the mechanics here look for anything and everything they can charge you for - especially if I show up without my husband.
Thanks for your help in advance,

All depends on the motor, van takes 4.5 to 5.0 quarts of oil try draining the oil and replace filter, if it is a v6 it will take a fram pro16. If it is a 2.4l 4 cylinder filter is fram 3614 try that and see what happens. If that does not work sounds a bad head gasket.

All Chrysler group minivans hold 5qts of oil. The two V6 engines use 05281090 filter while the 4cyl uses a 04105409 filter. The best thing to do is change the oil using the above filters from a Chrysler dealer. You will also need 5qts of 5W-30 engine oil. I recommend Valvoline.
