Shop mgr. Showed me very small seepage of fluid at inner side of both boots on power steering long rack. Not enough to drip. He immediately wanted to replace one rack (?) With a remanufactured rack and that plus labor came to $951. Since this is just slight seepage that just covers the boot clamps and the van only has only 32,500 miles on it I took a pass on the repair.
I must admit that it looked suspicious to me. I am not asking you to pass judgement but your input on the need for this repair would be very welcome.

Hi there,

The expanding rubber boot is just a dust boot, the actual seal is internal of the rack, now this will be weeping, but with that said, this is not a problem at the moment, you do see this every day, and they can last years with just a minor weep, I would not be doing the rack at this stage, but if you get to the point of having to top up the power steering on a regular time frame or you start seeing oil stains under the car, then this is when you really need to be looking at this work.
