Hello,
About 6 months ago we took our van in for a whining sound and diesel type motor sound. They replaced the water pump and the whining seem to go away. However, it still sounds like a Diesel. You know that loud grumbling sound like it is sputtering.
What is it?

Thanks.

Hi:
This is a tough one not actually hearing it. Did they make any comments about the timing chain, engine bearings, valves. Also, does the engine seem to run well / smooth? Finally, are you able to remove the serp belt yourself to check if the sound is coming from one of the belt driven components such as the alternator, idler pulley, power steering.

Let me know.

Joe

Hello,

Serp belt was replaced when water pump was replaces. I can't say I can remove that myself or my husband.

Nothing about the timing chain, engine bearings, valves.

The dealer calls the sound a growling sound. If that helps. Maybe now we could ask different questions since you gave a few things.

We have not had it back into the dealer since we had the work done. It seem the growling went away or got better for awhile, but seems really bad now. I think we may take it back in there and say. It's still there.

We had it looked at again and they replaced the Alternator! Sounds great now. So a van sounding like a diesel engine = bad alternator!

Thanks.
