I have spent many hours and $ researching this problem. After being told I should replace the entire wiring harness inside car, ($2000) I know there must be a better way. I have a problem with odometer lights going out. When they're out, no starting. If engine starts, it will kill 3 times and then not start. I can barely tap the dash about 10" behind the cluster and the lights will come on and everything will work. And I mean a slight tap will do it (or not). A chrysler mechanic out of town said do not buy the harness. This car had a "memo" sent out, (not a recall) advising stress points in the harness due to mounting too close to certain items that have rubbed on this harness for the life of the car. One such spot is around the computer over and behind the cluster. If you pull out the cluster and find the harness has chapping, would repairing by splice cause the computer to need a reset? I understand it would have to be towed to the dealer to get that done. I had a Dodge Caravan with electrical problems and cured them by splicing wires in door worn from opening and closing. That stress point was easily visible. I have a repair manual showing disassembly of dash/cluster panel and want to go for it! Whats your advice?

Hi: If you feel confident in your ability and you have the manual, I say go for it. However, make sure the battery is disconnected at least 30 minutes prior to repairing any wires. I do suggest that if the wires' insulation is rubbed off and the wire is shorting, just try to repair the original wiring rather than cutting and replacing. Use a good quality friction or electrical tape. Finally, if you can place wire loom over the wires to protect them from future problems (rubbing through) try to do it.

If you run into any problems, let me know.
