It is almost always 5/8ths size inside diameter. Cold car. Use safety glasses and drain the coolant from the radiator low enough to be below your working height. If you remove the cap it will start coming out faster then. I always disconnect the battery neg. Cable. Replace the hose clamps also. You will need pliers or a screwdriver to get the old clamps off, just loosen them and move them back. With your hands or pliers twist the hose to break it loose first. You can just use a knife or razor(ouch) to cut them off. I always clean and spray the nerw hose ends with spray silicone, the fittings too. Take off old clamps and slide the new ones on. Install and tighten, just enough to begin to squeeze the hose without cutting into it.
Start it and fill it. Be sure its hot and rev it till you have good heat, this means most of the air will be out. Then close the cap, and fill the white resevoir to the full hot line. Good to go.
It is most important to find out the cause was just wear alone. The cooling system is your cars best defense.
