1997 Chrysler Town and Country

In April of this year our serpentine belt was replaced. This is October and the belt came off. The mechanic said the water pump went out and needs to be replaced. I found something in your archives of questions that a belt could come off due to extra strain from another component ie water pump. We've had some issues in the past with this mechanic therefore, this is the first time I've ever tried to research something before authorizing repair. Question: your feedback on the above would be appreciated.
But mainly: "What signs would I have had that the water pump was going out? There's been no leaking. Thank You.

you may wont to ask them to check the tensioner too
