The motor is making a knocking noise, however it isn't the oil because it has been changed and checked on a regular basis. What else could be causing the noise? Could it be the transmission?

A heavy metallic noise is typucal of a spun rod bearing-(engine shot)

A ticking kind of noise is more typical of a lifter noise.
