I recently purchased a 2007 Chrysler Sebring. The car drives great, but after driving at 65+ for 25-30 mins there is a slight knocking and pulsating in the steering column. Once I slow and start making turns or braking the knocking gets louder. It's very noticeable through the steering column and in the front drivers side wheel. Once the car has sat for a period of time and cooled off the knocking goes away. But once it has been driven at a high speed again the noise returns. There is no vibration in the front end at anytime, it's just the knocking noise.

Hi there,

Thank you for the donation,

You will need to get the steering linkages and suspension inspected as there is a worn or loose component, also have all the front brakes inspected for a problem, this noise will be in the front end, as you feel it is possible in the drivers side, start looking at the brakes, steering & suspension here first.

I have had the same problem with a 2007 Sebring 4 cyl. 38,000 miles. HERE is the answer. You mentioned cooling and you are correct. The exhaust passes too closely over the Power Steering Rack & Pinion heating it up and expanding the tubing AND more importantly heating the power steering fluid and causing it too thin out. It is already thin being Synthetic. The solution? Buy a starter insulation wrap at O'rielly's, or the Internet, (used on engines with Headers) About 7"x27". Remove existing Heat Shield over the Power steering Rack & Pinion stretch out the starter wrap to cover the length of the Power Steering Rack & Pinion replace the Factory heat shield and your noise will be gone. Also, I changed the Fluid as well (only use the Mopar brand). If however there are too miles on the car the unit may need to be replaced along with adding the Starter wrap. Overall cost of wrap is $37.00. The Steering will cost between &450 & $600 parts and labor.
All the best too you. Don

Thank you for that information. Did you figure that out yourself or is there a service bulletin for this issue?
