Transmission problem
2002 Chrysler Sebring Automatic 137000 miles

The car started making a whining noise today. I’ve noticed the noise in idle and while driving. The car also seems to be having problems shifting gears. Sometimes when the car is in drive it acts as if it is in neutral or park. If I stop at a red light and then push the gas, the car acts like it is in neutral and then jolts into drive. In addition, when the car is moving it makes the whining noise and doesn’t seem to shift gears as the speed increases. I didn’t get the car over 35 mph today because the noise and the lack of shifting worried me. Does this sound as if the transmission is shot?

First thing that you need to do is check the trans fluid level. Sounds like you are way low. Make sure that you fill up with Mopar fluid or ATF+4 equivalent.

Due to the problems that you are having the transmission, your PCM enters what is called "limp mode" and limits your speed to a maximum of 38 mph to protect further stress to the transmission. You should have a check engine light on right now. You need to have it scanned (Autozone still does it for free) and get back with the code numbers so we can help diagnose.
