is the head gasket part of the drivetrain? would it be covered under warranty even if is is not part of the drivetrain?

You must be referring to the basic powertrain warranty. Head gasket should be a part of the warranty, but it all depends on the dealer and/or manufacturer interpretation of the warranty. If you are the first owner, they usually will take care of it, but it will harder if you purchase the vehicle used.
