How can I tell if I need to replace my water pump?

basically the engine will overheat or run very hot.
pump may be leaking, making noises.
squeeze upper hose with pair of gloves on with engine running and hot, hose should build up pressure and when you release hose pressure shoudl rush pass your hand, if not the pump may be bad!
