You may have two separate problems.
1. In regards to the check engine light, please take the vehicle to your local Autozone and have them scan the computer. Please post the code numbers here.
2. Temperature gauge nears "H".
A. Does this happen ALL the times, without any regards if the vehicle is at stop or moving? Or does it happen only at idle (at the stop light, for example) or only while the vehicle is in motion.
B. Have you physically open the radiator cap and coolant reservoir to visually check your coolant level at both places? Both radiator and coolant reservoir have to filled up to the level, for the optimum running temperature.
C. Once the temp gauge nears "H", have you noticed that radiator fans turn on?
D. Once the temp gauge nears "H", have you tried switching your HVAC dial selector to HEAT and turn the fan speed to max level? If not, perform this test, and have you noticed the temp gauge coming down?
E. Once the temp gauge nears "H", have you tried touching both radiator hoses? If no, please perform.
***CAUTION: The area is hot, please avoid touching any hot metal and/or touching the radiator fan. Severe injury may occur***
Have you noticed one of them is hotter than the other? If yes, which one?
F. Visually examine your engine bay for possible coolant leaks while the engine is running, and with the engine off.
Please post your result.
