my car died , mechanic says timing belt broke, says he will have to replace valves etc, maybe $2,800..is this estimate for real?

Your engine is an interference where if T belt brakes pistons contact valves. Belt should be replaced every 120K miles or 96 months.Hard to say about estimate job @ 12 hrs. and parts. So if shop rate in your area is $100 hr it could likely reach $2000.
