When I first start my car it smells of gas. What could be causing that? And could that be the reason why my car gets poor gas mileage. I get about 160 miles for every half tank.

Would you guess gas is leaking out? Since we can't see your car, I'd suggest you look under it to see if there's a puddle of gas and where it is. That would give us a clue as to the cause.

If there's no puddle on the ground, suspect leaking rubber o-rings in the fuel rail on the engine. That's a fire hazard.

It's only logical to assume if gas is leaking out, it's going to affect your gas mileage.
