It means that your deck lid (trunk, hatch) is open. A switch closes a circuit when you open or unlatch the decklid. If you know it is closed you can disconnect the switch usually on the latch and it just won't work. I don't think your check engine lamp will come on. Remember that you must insulate the disconnected wiring.
