I just noticed that my car doesn't shift to 5th gear. I don't do alot of high speed driving. Today I noticed that at speeds above 50 miles per hour the transmission was not shifting to 5th gear. I drove at 65 miles per hour with the engine laboring and the RPMs at 500 to 1,000 higher than they should be. When I realized what was happening I got off the free way and traveled smaller roads, never going above 50 mph.
Is the car safe to drive at reduced speeds (lower than 50 mph?
What could be the range of repair costs to have this situation corrected?
Thanks
Bruce

No it is not a good idea to drive it around in lower gear. It overheats both the transaxle and engine. In 1988 the first one I saw came in as an overheating problem, not a transmission problem. If you drive it at low speeds, you can get away with it. But not for long. And the failure may lead to more damage, it has so many times. At least make sure the fluid is at the correct level. A scan tool can help see what is wrong. It may be an electrical problem. As long as you stay at slow speeds, it won't do anything but get worse, mechanically. And may strand you. Ok
