We have replaced the thermostat but the engine remains at 1/3 running temperature. Blocked off front of rad and still remains below normal operating temperature. Effects transmission downshifting from overdrive to drive.

Hi:
If the t-stat is good, the engine should heat. First, rent a thermometer from a parts store that can be used in the radiator. With the engine cold, open the radator and place it in the radiator coolant and start the car. Allow it to run. See if the temp on the thermometer goes to around 195 degrees. If it does, try replacing the temp sending unit.
