are the side doors supposed to lock and unlock using the remote

On many cars, pressing the button once unlocks the driver's door. Pressing the button twice unlocks all doors.

You don't want all doors to unlock right away like some foreign cars used to do, because you just unwittingly unlocked the doors on the other side where those seedy-looking guys are standing.
