I have power to positive side to the coil, and I would like to know how to properly test the negative side of the coil.

What you need to do here is check the primary and secondary winding resistances of the coil. Or just do this stick the hot lead of the voltmeter to the negative side and crank engine over the voltmeter battery readings wil be fluctuating if the secondary circuit is functioning if not you won't get spark
No spark-check and test the distributor pick-up coil and ignition control module
