When I try to start my car it gives 1 solid click coming from the starter. Does that mean the starter is bad, or something else?

Usually yes. It has a pull in winding that pulls a copper disk in, connecting the cable power to the motor winding. It could have connection or cable resistance also, which would decrease the power neccesary to start it. The test is called a starter draw test. It usually shows whether it has a bad starter or it is not enough power. ok Although the starter solenoid is the smaller cylinder on the starter motor, it is replaced together as one unit.
