Noises problem
1995 Chrysler Concorde 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

About a month ago my car started making a soft sound like a rattling right after I took off. Then it would stop. It sounded like something caught in a bike spoke. It didn't do it all the time. Today it did it about the same but what ever it was broke I guess. It got loud, sounds like somethng rattling really loud under the hood. There was no change in temp, driving, motor, transmission changing or any thing I could notice different about the handling of the car. It sounds like a pully coming appart but there are no broken belts. My son said it sounds like it's coming from under the valve cover. It can't be a rod knocking because the car is running fine. I drove it about 30 mph for about 3 miles to get it home. It gets louder if you go faster. Can you help me? Thanks

Actually, a small part could break inside of your motor and bounce around for awhile without blowing the motor right away. But that doesn't mean that won't happen soon.

As far as I interpreting a noise for you, or locating it, I'm sorry to say that it's almost impossible to do without hearing myself.

The problem is, your "Rattling" may not be my "Rattling". And even if your ears are telling you that the sound is coming from a valve cover, doesn't mean that's really the case.

We (Technicians) use stethoscopes to locate noises inside of an engine. Because the metal structure of the cylinder block will make a metallic sound bounce around inside and make it seem as though it's coming from a place it isn't.

If you'd like to purchase a stethoscope, you could do the same. But I don't think that'd be wise. Any metallic sounds coming from an engine warrants a trained mechanic. Better to have it looked at before too much damage is done.
