Engine is misfiring and sputtering when idle, and has now progressed to losing power when accelerating. feels like car is going to die. Almost like it is running out of gas. It is not drivable at all, unless i want to lurch down the road. It is at the mechanics shop now, and they can't seem to pin point the problem. They did a compression test on all 4 cylinders (checked out good), replaced the spark plugs and the coil. They took it for a test drive (about 15 miles) but it started right back up again. Any advice would be great.

"but it started right back up again"

does that mean the problem started back up or the engine started up normally?

Don't overlook a plugged catalytic converter. That can make it backfire, sputter, idle very smoothly but lose power at higher speeds. You might hear a smooth hiss out the tail pipe instead of the normal puffs from the engine.
