1997 Chrysler Cirrus Front Wheel Drive Automatic 110000 miles

Whirring or squealing during acceleration while driving or in park can this be the altrnator belt. If not what might it be?

yes its probably a belt or a pulley

yes it is probably a belt or pulley. you have a tightening bolt for your serpentine belt which you have to access from under the engine so make sure you have it up on jack stands so the vehicle wil not fall on you. both belts are easy to replace if mechanically inclined. The alternator belt is tightened by adjusting the alternator itself there are three bolts to loosen one is in the back of alternator and two at top of alternator.

if it gets louder when turning the wheel, it could be your power steering fluid is low. Doesn't have to be very low to cause a whirring noise. Be sure to clean around cap before inspecting the level. It's hydraulic, so a little dirt can mess it up.
