i crossed my jumper cabels and it caught fire and i taped off the piece that caught fire and it started when a jumped it off but when a take the cabels off it dies what is the problem

Hi:
It sounds like you blew out the alt or battery. The car won't run with a totally dead battery and the alt won't recharge it. IF the car dies when you disconnect the jumpers, it is relying on the other car for power.
