A/C evaporator

I heard a loud crack in the dash and lost cold air from A/C. After trying the recharge, it leaked right out, I was told the evaporator was probably cracked and needed replacment. Approx $600 - $800 to replace. Is this something I could takle myself or better off for the pros?
