2003 Chevy Venture ticking noise

Air Conditioning problem
2003 Chevy Venture 4 cyl Automatic 79000 miles

When I turn on my air it makes a ticking noise & stops when I turn it off. It does work & blows cold air. Do you know what it could be?

Is the ticking noise inside of the vehicle (unde the dash) or outside (under the hood)?

Noise under the dash could be an actuator (these control the various doors which direct air to the vents, defrost of floor)
Under the hood it could be a a/c compressor clutch going bad.
