Our van started making loud screeching noises last year. It never was noisy while actually breaking, but just at the tail end of stopping. We had our breaks checked. Some parts just cleaned, other parts replaced. The noise went away. A few months later, the noise returned. A brake guy told us that some cars are just noisier than others when stopping.

Well, the noise has progressively gotten louder over the months. It just doesn't make sense to be that loud. Even just getting into the van causes the screeching noise to come from the rear. My husband and I are both clueless when it comes to automotives. What is the noise? How bad is this? I am to the point where I just want to trade the thing in for a new vehicle because it worries me so.

A lot of dust gets built up in the rear hubs and its got no where to go and when you apply te brakes it rolls under the shoes and makes a screaching noise. It can also make the peddle vibrate. You can take the rear hubs off as they will just pull off and bump the dust out of them. The shoes and pads they make today are different from the ones made years ago. A lot more dust. Have you noticed how much pad dust gets on the front rims? Now imagine how much is in the rear hubs and it can't get out.
