Air Conditioning problem

My mechanic says I need a new a.c. compressor. The car makes a kind of low growl all the time when it is on. He says the drive belt also needs replacing. I don't need the a.c. in January, do I need to replace this stuff right away? Also this bill will nbe close to 1100 dollars. Is that reasonable? Thanks.
