1999 Chevy Venture 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I need to remove the heat shield from the crossover exhaust pipe on my 99 Chevy Venture in order to get at the thermostat housing. I have the two bolts removed from the front of the heat shield but do not see how to get at the bolts in the back. Do I have to do it from underneath the van. Or remove something else from above (have already removed the upper rad hose and the air intake duct. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can access them from underneath the vehicle. It is a very awkward position but they are accessible through the bottom.

Goodluck.

Replacing Thermostat on 2002 Chevy Venture - The existing instructions provided on-line are excellent, with the only exception: You do not have to remove the cross-over exhaust, but it is necessary to remove the heat shield - Removing the heat shield allows you just enough room to get a 13mm box/open end wrench, not socket, on the bottom screw of the thermostat housing for loosing/removal and then to easily manuvere the thermostat out in order to replace it - It should be noted that in the diagrams provided doesn't mention the "Coolant By-Pass Pipe" that needs to be Step #1 for removal so the heat shield can be easlity removed - Everything can be done from top side -
Existing on-line instructions / advice saved me over $300.00 dollars - Thank you to those who help provide information - Hope my info adds benefit and saves a bit of time, trouble and more importantly money --
