Description:

1997 Chevy Venture minivan with 160k miles. When gear shift is put in "D", transmission does not engage, engine can rev (same as neutral). Transmission will engage when put in "1", "2" or "R" (not "3", "3" acts same as "D")

Previous problem: cable from gear shift to transmission was broken. I changed it myself. Been working fine for over 1 year since repair.

Any ideas? Could it be the cable again? Or is it something in the transmission.

If it works in 1 and 2, I would say you did a good job on the cable and it's still working. As far as the transmission, has the check engine light ever come on? If so, there could be a problem with the tcm. However, if it hasn't, it sounds internal. When you drive and shift it manually, will it go into 3rd gear if you put it in drive?
