Yes when the bearings fail or the gear teeth get chipped or worn it will make a louder sound as you go faster. So will bad rear axle bearings. Id check those first.
jack up the back of the vehicle, remove the wheels, remove the brake drums, check how much play is in the axle while watching the oil seal. if it is leaking oil then you will likely need a new seal at minimum and possibly new axle shafts as well.
