I was told I need to change switch -can anyone tell me where it is
and how to remove?

The switch you looking for is at the transmisssion. When in reverse position this is where it powers the reverse light-have you check for power at the bulb socket and inspected the bulb and ground-

My truck and van book for 79-86 Chilton says

Its on the shift linkage on the left side of transmission integrated with neutral start switch
