I have a 98 Chevy Lumina 3.1L car and when it sits a couple of days without starting, I start it up fine but when I go to drive and give it gas it cuts out bad and acts like its going to die. Well it also doesnt want to get about 20 mph half the time and it takes forever to get up to speed and it sometimes back fires as well. I had my fuel filter changed by a mechanic and he said that should fix the problem. But then when I go home and dont start or move the car for several days it starts doing the same thing again. What can I do to fix this? Would it be the fuel pump or fuel injector? I've also put the stuff in the tank to get water out and clean it, but its still doing it. What can I do to fix the problem?

Have you ever checked the fuel pump pressure? I've seen them pump enough to start and idle fine, but not put out enough pressure when put under power. It could also be your converter's plugged restricting your exhaust. If it can't breath it won't have any power.

i havent done that yet no. the only things i have done is change the gas filter and the spark plugs. i buy the gas treatment stuff that includes removing water and after about an hour it seems to work. so i have no clue.

If you unhook your gas line at the filter and turn your key on a couple of times, catch the gas it pumps in a clear bottle and you'll be able to see if got alot of water or dirt. The water will all be at the bottom of the bottle. It's an easy way to check.
