I just noticed that my shifter will go from park to reverse, neutral and drive but stops at drive. The shift arm will go no further. I rarely need the lower gears so don't know how long this has been failing. I guess about 6 - 8 weeks.

The shift lock control actuator on the column may have failed, possibly a shift cable issue. More likely a selector shaft or detent lever on the transmission. Those are the two things I would check first.

The transmission was ruled out. I took shifter loose from transmission and shifter still wouldn't go past drive. Thanks for your response. I will go from here.

Okay good job. I have to wonder whether there is some unwinding in the cable that is inhibiting movement past a certain point. If so, you should be able to feel that under the cable insulation. Then second, I would get into the steering column and look at the shift lock actuator.

Keep me posted.
