Sounds to me like your fuel pump is losing back pressure and stalling itself out due to loss of fuel, check the fuel filter first, then replace the fuel pump. If that doesn't work go get your injectors cleaned. Here is how to change the tank out in the diagrams below. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Why would there be a green ball in the fuel tank?

The green ball is to prevent fuel from exiting the filler neck while cornering and filling the tank. It should be held in place by a plastic cage in the bottom of the neck. It is possible a thief tried to siphon gas and damaged it.

I am putting a new gas tank on my truck when I took the old one off I found that one of the of four of the lines from the sending unit was not and had not been hooked up. Infact it was toatly gone at the front of the truck. The truck ran fine but the tank leaked. It is the smallest of the four, and does not thread on the hose clamps on. My question is what is that line for, and can I get by without it?

It is most likely an emissions line for the EVAP system. It is not a good idea to go without it as contaminants will get sucked into the fuel system and cause a lot of problems. Replace the line as soon as you can.

Factory ground wires are usually black. Look for a sheet metal screw run through the flange of the gas tank outside of the welded seam. GM had a real lot of trouble with rust affecting the ground to their metal gas tanks. The fix was to drill the hole and attach a ground wire with a self-tapping screw. This doesn't apply to the newer plastic gas tanks.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Cab-Mounted Tanks

Remove the seat back hold-down bolts and tilt the seat back forward.
If equipped, remove the tank cover.
Drain the tank.
Disconnect the fuel line, meter wire, and ground wire.
Remove the lug wrench and lug wrench mount.
Remove the bolts and fasteners securing the tank in place.
Remove the tank from the cab, and at the same time, disengage the filler neck from the rubber grommet in the cab opening.
Remove the meter assembly from the tank.
Installation is the reverse of removal.

Except Cab-Mounted Tanks

Drain the tank.
Jack up your vehicle and support it with jack stands.
Remove the clamp on the filler neck and the vent tube hose.
Remove the gauge hose which is attached to the frame.
While supporting the tank securely, remove the support straps.
Lower the tank until the gauge wiring can be removed.
Remove the tank.
Install the unit by reversing the removal procedure. Make certain that the anti-squeak material is replaced during installation.
Lower the vehicle.

If this has the mechanical fuel pupm there are two tests to check. One is pressure and the other is flow. Onr or the other can be screwed up. Also as this is probably a carb change the fuel filter in the carb if it has one. Also it could be a carb problem like the choke plate sticking closed if that 's the cause of that then check the vacuum pulloff for it as it either is leaking through the hose or the vacuum motor isn't any good.

I drove some flood water crossing the road the other day and I think water got into my tank around the gasket. As you see the truck is pretty old. What is the best easiest way to remove the water from the gas?

Hi there,

if your truck has a drain plug in the tank do it that way and flush the tank with a small amount of petrol, change the filter and add 200-300ml of metho as this will help disperse the water as well. If no drain plug either try and siphon as much out as you can and change the filter or drop out the tank and flush it fully that way.

1982 Chevy C-10 200,000 miles 305ci. Truck has duel tanks with the switch on the dash that selects the tank and also enables the fuel gauge to read the tank in use. The problem is the gauge doesn't work when the passenger side tank is used. I can hear the fuel switching valve working when I switch tanks. The gauge works on the drivers side but when the pass. Side is used the gauge points to the right like it's laying down. Do I have a bad sending unit?

You do indeed have a bad sending unit. Before you replace the unit you should check the electrical connections first. Especially the ground with this being such an old truck.
