My 1999 Chevy Cavalier with 117,000 miles started making a grinding noise that seems to be coming from the area of the serpentine belt. It almost sounds like a bearing. The noise is present whenever the car is running. If I turn my air conditioning on, the noise will go away. Am I looking at a belt replacement, or does it sound like a more serious problem?

pull up on the belt about an inch and see if the belt will return to normal. if not replace the tensioner. also you can remove the belt and turn the other pulleys by hand (i.e. alternator idler), to see if the pulleys feel rough as if a bad bearing is presistant. anyway hope this helps.
