A month and a half ago I got the fuel pump to my 1998 chevy truck changed out. It cost a lot of money to do. Since then the check engine light has come back on 6 times. At first it took a few days before it would come back on. The last time it took 2 weeks. The mechanics inform me it could have been the valve which they replaced and also a leaky hose which they replaced and also due to gas cap not fully tightened which they replaced. Why does it keep coming back on after all these repairs?

Hi:
Listen, the only thing they said that makes any sense to me is the gas cap. That sounds like there is an EVAP leak. I want you to do something. Take the truck to a nationally recognized parts store and have them scan it for trouble codes. Most will do it for free. After they tell you what the code is that keeps turning the light on, DON'T BUY anything until you get back to me. Then together we'll determine why the light is on and how it needs fixed. To me it sounds like no one knows what is wrong with it and just want to replace parts.

Let me know what you find. I'll be waiting.

Joe

I just got my truck back from the mechanic and he specified that perhaps the computer was still trying to read properly the new valve they put in. But if it comes on again I will take it to Auto Zone and have they test it. Thanks again for your quick response

Hi:
What your mechanic said may be the problem. Let me know if it comes on again.
