1997 Chevy Truck transfer case

4 wheel drive wont engauge some times.the lights on dash switch come on and off.when on 4 wheel drive works and when off it wont enguage

checked the wiring harness from the back of the transfer case to the front axle actuator, if the problem is not there it may be actuator be on the front axle or the sensor on the transfer case.
