1997 chevy suburban problems

I just replaced all upper gaskets to repair a bad head gasket on my 1997 chevy 7.4 liter suburban with 170,000 miles. I have made sure that timing is correct as far as tdc on #1 cylinder, the engine starts up and idles perfectly, but under load, the engine sputters ( ba ba ba ba and then kicks in with almost normal power at about 2500 rpm. I have check timing with a light and it shows timing is way off ( about 12 degrees off, I think advanced). So I have tried moving the distributor one tooth in each direction, even two teeth in each direction, and it will not start. it revs up fine after about 2000rpm.
Ive replaced plugs,wires,cap and rotor, whats next?

Just a suggestion---Try checking your base timing. Don't know the exact procedure for your vehicle,but usually involves disconnecting or jumping a wire or two (which prevents the computer from controlling the timing)then setting the base timing,then reconnecting the wire(s).
If the base timing is incorrect the timing advance will be also.
Had this problem on my brother's Suburban.
