We are considering purchasing a 1996 Chevy SWB extended cab truck for my 16 year old son. The truck is in excellent condition except for the fact that it has 200,000 miles on it. The only problem we can sense is the truck shifts hard from 1st to 2nd gear. The truck is being sold cheap and we don't know whether to take a chance on this not being a major expense with the transmission or should we run away asap! Any ideas or recommendations?

Most likely spring for 2/4 servo is broken AND/OR servo Piston is hanging up which is very common. Aftermarket part is available and better than OEM part and won't fail like the OEM does. Shifting hard and quick is uncomfortable BUT does not hurt transmission. It actually extends the life of it because of less time for friction/heat buildup. Servo can be replaced on passenger side of transmission without any special tools and tranny does not need removed from vehicle. Look for a round 3inch or so diameter cover with a spring lock on passenger side of tranny just above where pan meets tranny. Pan does not need removed either! Can be done in a garage without even jacking truck up!
