We are still over heating.

Ok I last asked for help with an over heating issue and was given some great advice, well upon attempting to repair the things suggested we are having a big problem! We replaced the Radiator Cap, and put in the coolant/anti freeze and when we were letting the car warm up to see if it was still over heating before we replaced the thermostat, the car started smoking fairly moderate (smoke) with a strong smell. I cant explain the odor/smell. But it was pretty bad. The car has sat for nearly 5 months, with just a few attempts at fixing/looking to see whats wrong with it. We have went out and started it a few times also, but my questions are.

1) What is the smoke. Normal. Concern. (Is this normal from sitting so long?

2) After replacing the thermostat what are our options on not paying a FORTUNE to fix this issue?

3) Can some one please be detailed as to what to do, and how to check for problems/tests

We did get the repair manual for this car and it is rather confusing.

Well to address your first concern. If someone spilled any fluids on the manifolds yes it may smoke and thats normal should subside after letting it run for an hour or more. As for the overheating yes I would reccommend replacing the thermostat but also check to see that the fan is working and the control mod is kicking on when the coolant gets up to temp. Good luck :)

I know this is a stupid question, but if the thermostat is bad, can that cause the car to over heat? I dont know if the thermostat plays a role in kicking on the fan or not, but if so and it is the thermostat, just let the car run for an hour or so, and the smoke should subside?
And is there a difference between antifreez and coolant?
Thanks a lot!
