Since the break is coming on I would take a look at the switch itself. The switch is usually located on the break and on some vehicles shares the same switch as the overdrive. It may have come loose and tripping or shorting out.

Suggested Repair

Inspect the brake light switch, usually located at the brake pedal. On some vehicles it shares the overdrive circuit. Check whether the switch has come loose, is tripping, or is shorting, and repair or replace it as needed.

Conversation Summary

The owner of a 1994 Chevy Silverado 4x4 with a 5.0 engine and 128,000 miles reported that the transmission would not stay in overdrive. While driving about 60 mph it downshifted and the red brake light came on; the light later went out and overdrive returned. After about a week the brake light stayed on and overdrive was lost. The expert advised inspecting the brake switch, which on some vehicles is shared with the overdrive circuit, because it may have come loose and be tripping or shorting.
