1981 Chevy Truck Plug Gap

My son in law has a 1 ton, 4 wheel drive, flat bed Chevy with a 350 cu in engine. He changed out the plugs and plug wires and a friend told him the gap should be .045. Now it is missing. I told him I thought .045 needed to be closer to .035. What do you think?
