Engine Performance problem
1976 Chevy Truck V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic

i am getting a 1976 chevy truck from a friend. he says that there is about 8 month old gas sitting in the tank and it will not start. however when running a line from an exerior tank straigh to the carb it starts right up. what could the problems be?
